Sea Hare - Dolabella auricularia
The Sea Hare is a remarkable algae consumer, making it an excellent addition to your aquarium's cleaning team. These creatures efficiently consume various algae types, including macro algae. Their bodies are primarily dark brown and tan, adorned with distinct dark patterns.
Reaching up to 12 inches in length, Sea Hares require a minimum tank size of 25 gallons. They are peaceful and coexist harmoniously with other fish, corals, and invertebrates. If threatened, they can release a dye as a defense mechanism, which may affect your tank's environment. It's crucial to have chemical filtration ready to remove this dye if necessary.
These herbivores thrive in tanks with abundant live rock and substrate, where they continuously graze on algae. The live rock also offers them refuge from the intense lighting typical in reef aquariums. If your tank lacks sufficient algae, supplement their diet with kelp sheets.
