Colored Royal Tuxedo Sea Urchin - Mespilia globulus
The Royal Urchin is a majestic sea creature, perfect for enhancing your aquarium's cleanup crew. Known for its striking deep blue hue and crown-like spines, the Royal Urchin is a standout addition. These urchins grow to about 3 inches and thrive in tanks of at least 10 gallons. They are peaceful and coexist well with other marine life, including invertebrates, corals, and fish. During the day, they hide among live rocks, emerging at night to feast on algae. Be cautious with acrylic tanks, as their strong mouths can cause damage.
These reef-safe urchins primarily consume algae from live rocks, substrates, equipment, and glass, making them excellent algae controllers. As herbivores, they require a diet rich in greens. If your tank lacks sufficient algae, consider supplementing with algae sheets. Royal Urchins are sensitive to water quality; deteriorating conditions can lead to spine loss, so maintain optimal water parameters.
