The Fire Urchin is a remarkable and distinctive sea urchin native to the Indo-Pacific region. These urchins boast a predominantly red, spherical body adorned with venomous white spines.
Reaching up to 9 inches in size, Fire Urchins require a minimum tank size of 120 gallons. They are semi-aggressive invertebrates and generally coexist peacefully with other fish and invertebrates. However, they may consume some coral polyps, so exercise caution when adding a Fire Urchin to a reef aquarium.
The sting of a Fire Urchin can be quite painful to humans. If stung, seek medical help if you have severe allergies or if the pain persists after applying hot water. Handle these urchins with care. They thrive in tanks with abundant live rock, spending daylight hours hidden and emerging at night to graze on algae and detritus. Fire Urchins are excellent additions to cleanup crews, even in tanks with large, aggressive fish.
As omnivores, Fire Urchins primarily obtain nutrition by scavenging. To supplement their diet, you can add nori or marine algae sheets, or provide high-quality flake or pellet foods.
