Waspfish - Paracentrogon longispinus
The Waspfish is a remarkable and distinctive marine species. These fish exhibit a range of colors from earthy browns to vibrant oranges, influenced by their habitat. Characterized by their elongated, fan-like fins and venomous spines, Waspfish are truly unique.
Reaching up to 5 inches in length, Waspfish require a minimum tank size of 55 gallons. They are semi-aggressive and generally coexist peacefully with other fish, though smaller fish and invertebrates may be at risk. Therefore, it's not recommended to introduce a Waspfish into a reef aquarium.
Optimal conditions for Waspfish include tanks with abundant live rock, macroalgae, and marine plants, providing them with ample hiding spots. As ambush predators, they thrive in environments where they can conceal themselves. Caution is advised when handling Waspfish due to their venomous spines; seek medical attention if stung.
As carnivores, Waspfish require a diet rich in meaty foods. Offerings such as mysis and brine shrimp, high-quality frozen foods, and small pieces of fresh seafood will keep them healthy. Live feeder shrimp may be necessary to acclimate them to captivity.
