Stars & Stripes Puffer - Arothron hispidus

The Stars & Stripes Puffer is a captivating addition to any home aquarium. Its tan body is adorned with numerous small white spots resembling stars, while the lower half features stripes, giving it its distinctive name.

These puffers can reach up to 18 inches in length and require a minimum tank size of 120 gallons. While not overly aggressive, they are best housed with larger, semi-aggressive tank mates, as they may occasionally bother smaller fish.

Not considered reef-safe, Stars & Stripes Puffers may nip at corals and consume invertebrates. They thrive in larger FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) tanks and are known for their engaging personalities, often becoming more like family pets.

When startled, these puffers can inflate to more than twice their normal size. It's recommended to transfer them using acrylic containers to avoid stress, and not to provoke this behavior for amusement.

With beak-like teeth, feeding them hard-shelled invertebrates helps maintain dental health. As carnivores, they require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as high-quality frozen and fresh seafood.
