The Starry Puffer ranks among the largest of pufferfish species. These fish exhibit a predominantly white and brown coloration, adorned with numerous black and brown spots across their bodies.
Reaching an adult size of approximately 47 inches, Starry Puffers require a minimum aquarium size of 300 gallons. They are semi-aggressive and generally coexist peacefully with other sizable fish. However, they are unsuitable for reef aquariums as they tend to consume any invertebrates they encounter.
For optimal health, Starry Puffers thrive in a FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) tank alongside other large fish. When threatened, they can inflate their bodies significantly, though this should not be induced for entertainment as it stresses the fish. When transferring, use an acrylic container instead of a net to prevent inflation.
As carnivores, Starry Puffers need a diet rich in meaty foods. Hard-shelled foods are ideal to help wear down their beak-like teeth. High-quality seafood such as squid, krill, shrimp, and clam are excellent dietary choices.
