Porcupine Puffer - Diodon holocanthus
The Porcupine Puffer is a fascinating and distinctive fish, renowned for its spiky appearance and ability to inflate its body to twice its normal size. These puffers can reach up to 20 inches in length and require a minimum tank size of 180 gallons. Known for their semi-aggressive nature, they may attack smaller fish and consume invertebrates like crabs and shrimp.
Due to their diet and behavior, Porcupine Puffers are not considered reef-safe, as they tend to eat smaller fish and essential invertebrates in reef tanks. They thrive best in larger tanks with other semi-aggressive fish. As carnivores, their diet should primarily consist of meaty foods such as crab, shrimp, and clam, though they may occasionally nibble on herbivore foods.
With a lively personality, the Porcupine Puffer can be a delightful addition to a fish-only tank, provided they have the right diet and compatible tank mates.
