Spotted Hawkfish - Cirrhitichthys aprinus
The Spotted Hawkfish is an uncommon sight in home aquariums. These fish are predominantly red with distinct white patterns and black spots. They grow to a maximum size of about 5 inches and require a minimum tank size of 55 gallons. Known for their semi-aggressive nature, they may only pose a threat to smaller fish and some invertebrates, while generally being safe for coral. Therefore, they can be introduced to reef tanks with caution.
Ensure your tank has a secure lid, as Spotted Hawkfish are known jumpers and may attempt to escape from uncovered tanks. They are native to the Indo-West Pacific region and serve as a food source in various cultures. These fish thrive in tanks with ample live rock, where they can hunt for small invertebrates between meals.
As carnivores, Spotted Hawkfish require a diet rich in meaty foods. Feeding them mysis and brine shrimp, high-quality frozen foods, and small pieces of fresh seafood will keep them healthy and content.
