Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish

The Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish is a spectacular inhabitant of the coral reefs of Fiji and Tonga. Their amazing colors of bright blue and yellow coupled with their very active swimming makes the Fiji Devil a very popular, near perfect choice for “nano” systems as well as larger reef aquariums.  Also called the South Seas Devil, the Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish aggressively defends its small territories, darting in and out of openings and crevices. The Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish is a close relation to the Blue Damselfish (Devil).  Llike the Blue Damselfish, the Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish earns its title of “Fiji Devil” by its direct application of relentless aggression directed towards any fish that comes near their territory, especially its own kind.   The Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish are sexually dimorphic; its females have a yellow dorsal fin; the males have a blue dorsal fin.

Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish thrive in an aquarium of at least 110 litres well-supplied with a sand and crushed coral substrate and many territories separated to reduce the “Figi Devil’s” aggression.  Open swimming space with plenty of live rock for play and shelter are essential. Housed in an established system, utilizing quality biological and mechanical filtration as well as a protein skimmer, the Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish also benefit from a colonized refugium where they could have a constant supply of fresh amphipods and copepods in addition to other live zooplankton treats. A refugium is an area whose climate remains habitable, especially for rare or endangered species.  Bright lighting brings out the beautiful colors of the Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish.  A variety of heterospecific tank mates that are themselves semi to aggressive, such as angelfish, butterflyfish, small groupers, wrasse, clownfish, pseudochromis, are suitable, but they need to be able to withstand the harassment of the Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish.  Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish are completely reef compatible and are an excellent choice for “nano” systems as well as larger reef setups.  Because Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish will typically attack small invertebrates, most hobbyists choose to use cleaner fish (neon gobies and similar species) rather than shrimp species for anti-parasite and hygiene needs. Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish see shrimp as food.

Fiji Blue Devil Damselfish are omnivores and will eat phytoplankton and zooplankton, benthic invertebrates in the sand, various marine algae, and snails, tubeworms, and small fish, live, frozen, or freeze-dried, and vitamin enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, ghost shrimp, krill, chopped clams, marine algae, mussels, silver sides, snails, and quality, Spirulina-based flake foods for carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores.  Feeding should be 1 to 2 times per day and only what will be consumed within a few minutes.
