Pom Pom Crab - Lybia tessellata
The **Pom Pom Crab** is a fascinating and distinctive species. This diminutive crab is known for holding a small anemone in each claw, using them as a defense mechanism against predators. When it raises its anemones, it resembles a cheerleader with pom-poms, which is how it got its name.
**Pom Pom Crabs** grow to about 1 inch and can thrive in aquariums as small as 10 gallons. They are generally peaceful and coexist well with other tank inhabitants. However, the anemones they carry can sting certain other anemones, invertebrates, and fish. Despite this, **Pom Pom Crabs** are largely considered safe for reef environments.
These crabs have a predominantly red body with dark stripes on their legs. Multiple **Pom Pom Crabs** can be housed together without aggression. They are excellent members of a tank's cleanup crew, scavenging for leftover food in the substrate and rocks.
As omnivores, **Pom Pom Crabs** need a diet rich in both meaty and plant-based foods. Their diet can include mysis shrimp, small pieces of fresh seafood, high-quality frozen foods, and premium pellet and flake foods.
