Pithos Crab - Pitho mirabilis
The Pithos Crab (Pitho mirabilis) is an intriguing species from the Mithracidae family, gaining popularity in the reef aquarium community. This small, algae-consuming crab hails from the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic Ocean. Known for its unique look, the Pithos Crab features a mottled brown, tan, or yellowish rounded body and specialized claws that efficiently remove algae from rocks and surfaces. Primarily active at night, these crabs emerge to feed on various algae types, including hair, bubble, and other unwanted algae.
In aquariums, Pithos Crabs are generally peaceful and coexist well with most tank inhabitants. However, some may occasionally nip at corals, so monitoring is advised. They can fall prey to aggressive or predatory fish, so selecting compatible tank mates is essential. Due to their algae-eating nature and compact size, Pithos Crabs are a valuable part of the cleanup crew in reef tanks, aiding in algae control and promoting a healthy environment.
