The Smalltail Pencil Wrasse is a distinctive and somewhat uncommon species of wrasse. Initially, these fish exhibit a pink to red hue, but as they mature into males or reach their terminal phase, they develop a vibrant green color with prominent blue and yellow horizontal stripes.
Reaching up to 5 inches in length, Smalltail Pencil Wrasses require a minimum tank size of 75 gallons. They are known for their jumping ability, so a tightly sealed tank lid is essential to prevent them from leaping out when startled. Generally peaceful, they coexist well with other fish, corals, and invertebrates. However, male Smalltail Pencil Wrasses can be aggressive towards other males, so it's best to keep them in groups of females or with one male and several females.
These wrasses thrive in aquariums with ample live rock and sand. They spend their time foraging for small invertebrates among the rocks and may burrow in the sand at night. Without a sandy substrate, their lifespan may be shortened.
As carnivores, Smalltail Pencil Wrasses need a diet rich in meaty foods. Offering mysis and brine shrimp, high-quality frozen foods, and premium pellet and flake foods will ensure their health and happiness.
