Rock Wrasse - Thalassoma amblycephalum
The Rock Wrasse is a visually striking, large wrasse native to the waters near Mexico. These fish feature a predominantly blue head with a prominent yellow stripe behind it, while the rest of their body is adorned with pinkish-red hues.
Reaching up to 6 inches in length, Rock Wrasses require a minimum aquarium size of 75 gallons. Known for their jumping ability, they must be housed in tanks with secure lids to prevent escape. These fish exhibit semi-aggressive behavior, which intensifies with age. While juvenile Rock Wrasses can coexist, they tend to become hostile towards each other as they mature. They may also show aggression towards smaller fish and invertebrates, making their compatibility with reef tanks uncertain.
For optimal well-being, Rock Wrasses thrive in environments with abundant live rock, providing hiding spots and a source of tiny invertebrates for snacking between meals.
As carnivores, Rock Wrasses need a diet rich in meaty foods. Offer them mysis and brine shrimp, high-quality frozen foods, and small pieces of fresh seafood to ensure their health and vitality.
