The Richmond's Wrasse is renowned for its vibrant colors and is highly desired among wrasse species. These fish display striking horizontal chain-like patterns along their bodies. Males typically exhibit more blue and green hues, while females are predominantly orange. Juveniles are distinguished by eye spots on their dorsal fins.
The Richmond's Wrasse can grow up to 8 inches and requires a minimum tank size of 90 gallons. Due to their strong jumping ability, it's crucial to have a securely fitted lid on the tank to prevent escape. Generally peaceful, Richmond's Wrasses coexist well with other fish and corals but may pose a threat to some invertebrates, so caution is advised when adding them to a reef environment.
These wrasses thrive in aquariums with abundant live rock and sand. They forage for small invertebrates on live rock between meals and burrow in the sand at night. Without these elements, they may become stressed and unwell. It's beneficial to keep them in small groups, either all females or one male with several females, as males can be aggressive towards each other. In the absence of a male, a female may transform into a male.
As carnivores, Richmond's Wrasses require a diet rich in meaty foods such as mysis and brine shrimp, along with high-quality frozen meats. As they mature, they may need larger food items like small pieces of fresh seafood.
