Purple Velvet Wrasse - Cirrhilabrus luteovittatus
The Purple Velvet Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus luteovittatus), also referred to as the Yellowstreaked Fairy Wrasse or Velvet Multicolor Fairy Wrasse, is a visually striking fish native to the Western Pacific, especially around Fiji and Tonga. Males boast vibrant maroon bodies with a unique yellow streak, while females display a more muted mix of olive green and purplish-blue. These fish typically inhabit small groups in lagoons and channels, often near coral or macroalgae, adding vibrant color to their environment.
In home aquariums, the Purple Velvet Wrasse is favored for its beauty and generally peaceful demeanor. They are active swimmers, requiring ample space to explore. A well-maintained tank with plenty of live rock and hiding spots will ensure their comfort. As carnivores, they thrive on a diet of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. While hardy, acclimating adult males can be challenging, often needing live food to stimulate eating. With proper care, the Purple Velvet Wrasse will flourish, showcasing its captivating beauty in any saltwater aquarium.
