The Common Cleaner Wrasse, scientifically known as Labroides dimidiatus, is a highly beneficial fish for aquariums. These fish play a crucial role by removing dead skin and parasites from other fish. They have a sleek body that transitions from silver to blue, with a distinct black line running along their length.
Reaching up to 5 inches, Common Cleaner Wrasses require a minimum tank size of 15 gallons. They are peaceful and coexist well with most fish, corals, and invertebrates in reef tanks. However, they may persistently attempt to clean some fish. These wrasses thrive in small groups or pairs.
Despite their reputation for being challenging to maintain, Common Cleaner Wrasses can be quite hardy. They eagerly consume nori and frozen foods. African varieties are often more resilient. Larger specimens are preferable, as smaller ones struggle with feeding due to their tiny mouths. They enjoy baby brine and mysis shrimp, often breaking down larger pieces to consume. They also relish nori attached to live rock.
In larger tanks with bigger tangs, Common Cleaner Wrasses are constantly at work. While our experience has been positive, we recommend this fish for advanced aquarists only.
