Niger Triggerfish - Odonus niger
The Niger Triggerfish is a favorite among marine aquarium enthusiasts. These fish boast a striking deep purple hue and elegant long streamers.
Reaching up to 18 inches in length, the Niger Triggerfish requires a minimum 80-gallon tank for optimal health. They are not reef-friendly, as they may consume invertebrates crucial to reef ecosystems. While generally peaceful with smaller fish, there are instances of them attacking decorative species. It's advisable to house them in a spacious, fish-only aquarium with other semi-aggressive or aggressive species.
Providing ample rock structures is essential for the Niger Triggerfish, as they can be shy and need hiding spots. Their strong teeth can damage acrylic tanks, so consider this when setting up their habitat. Like other triggerfish, they produce a distinctive grunting sound.
As carnivores, Niger Triggerfish thrive on a diet rich in meaty foods. Clams, shrimp, and squid are excellent choices, along with small pieces of fresh marine fish.
With the right tank size and compatible tank mates, the Niger Triggerfish can add vibrant color to your fish-only aquarium.
