Sailfin Tang - Zebrasoma veliferum
The Sailfin Tang is an elegant and visually captivating species of surgeonfish. These fish feature a predominantly deep tan body adorned with bold vertical white stripes and a vibrant yellow tail. When their fins are fully extended, Sailfin Tangs can become quite tall, necessitating ample space in your aquarium.
Sailfin Tangs can grow up to 15 inches in length and require a minimum tank size of 80 gallons. They are strong swimmers, needing both vertical and horizontal swimming space. Generally peaceful, they coexist well with most fish, corals, and invertebrates in a reef tank. However, they may show aggression towards other tangs, particularly those of the Zebrasoma genus. If you plan to keep multiple tangs, introduce them simultaneously and consider a larger tank.
As herbivores, Sailfin Tangs thrive on a diet rich in greens. Offer them nori, algae sheets, spirulina, high-quality flakes, pellets, and mysis shrimp to ensure their health and vitality. A tank with plenty of established live rock will provide additional algae for grazing between feedings.
Sailfin Tangs are prone to various diseases, making quarantine essential before adding them to your tank. Enhancing their diet with supplements like garlic and selcon can help maintain their health.
