Purple Tang - Zebrasoma xanthurum
The Purple Tang is a visually striking species of surgeonfish, featuring a rich purple body and a vibrant yellow tail. Its body is adorned with various black patterns. These fish can grow up to 10 inches and require a minimum tank size of 75 gallons. They are active swimmers and thrive in longer tanks with ample swimming space. Known to be reef-safe, Purple Tangs coexist peacefully with other fish, corals, and invertebrates in reef aquariums.
Despite their beauty, Purple Tangs are known for their aggressive nature, particularly towards other Zebrasoma tangs. To minimize aggression, it's advisable to introduce all tangs to the tank simultaneously and ensure a large tank with plenty of algae. They are prone to HLLE (Head and Lateral Line Erosion), so maintaining excellent water conditions and adding supplements like selcon and garlic to their diet can help boost their immune system.
As herbivores, Purple Tangs require a diet rich in plant-based foods. Offering nori, algae sheets, high-quality flakes, pellets, and mysis shrimp will keep them healthy and thriving in your aquarium.
