Cowrie - Cypraea sp.
The Cowrie is an interesting and usefull snail. Cowries have shells that come in a variety of colors, the most common being tan, white and green. The shell of a Cowrie has sharp groves which protect it from predators.
Cowries reach a maximum adult size of around 6 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 20 gallons. Cowries are peaceful snails and will not bother other inverts or fish in your tank. Cowries can eat soft coral and sponges, so only add a Cowrie to your reef tank under caution.
Cowries should be kept in tanks with lots of live rock for them to hide in during the day. Cowries are nocturnal snails and will mostly only be active in the evening and night time hours. Cowries will spend most of their time going through your tank looking for algae and diatoms. Cowries also prefer tanks that are a bit cooler as well.
Cowries are omnivores, but tend to eat mostly green foods. Cowries will get most of their nutrition through scavenging, but you can supplement their diet with green foods like nori or marine algae sheets and high quality flake foods.
