Originally named, Scyllium plagiosum, the whitespotted bamboo shark's scientific name was later changed to the currently valid Chiloscyllium plagiosum. The genus name, Chiloscyllium, is derived from the Greek “cheilos” meaning lip and “skylla” defined as a kind of shark

The Whitespotted Bamboo Shark, Chiloscyllium plagiosum, is also known as the Whitespotted Bamboo Shark, Bamboo Cat Shark, and the Brown Banded Bamboo Cat Shark. These fish come from the Indo-West Pacific region. They have a brown body with dark brown bands and numerous white or bluish spots. They are sometimes called cat sharks because of their barbels which resemble a feline’s whiskers.

Sharks are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods, such as pieces of fresh shrimp, scallop, squid, and marine fish flesh. They should be fed individually using feeding tongs. They should be fed 2 to 3 times a week and should not have to compete for their food.

The Whitespotted Bamboo Shark can reach up to 40″ in length and requires an aquarium of at least 100 gallons with plenty of hiding places, a soft sandbed (coarse sand can damage the skin on their underside), excellent water quality and room to swim. They are known to dig and will topple non-secured rockwork and coral.

They are not reef safe and will eat smaller fish and invertebrates.
