The Silver Moony, scientifically known as Monodactylus argenteus, is a striking fish species that is rarely found in home aquariums. These fish feature a predominantly silver body with yellowish tones on their upper parts. They are characterized by two vertical black stripes, one crossing their eyes and the other positioned just behind them.
Reaching an adult size of approximately 8 inches, Silver Moony fish require a minimum tank size of 125 gallons. They are semi-aggressive and generally do not disturb other fish, corals, or invertebrates in the tank. However, they may irritate smaller fish, consume tiny invertebrates, and occasionally nip at corals. Caution is advised when adding a Silver Moony to a reef tank for these reasons.
These fish thrive in tanks with abundant live rock and substrate. Established live rock provides algae and small invertebrates for the Silver Moony to feed on between meals and offers hiding spots if needed. They do well in small groups if introduced simultaneously in a sufficiently large tank.
As omnivores, Silver Moony fish need a diet rich in both meaty and plant-based foods. Feeding them mysis and brine shrimp, high-quality frozen foods, nori or marine algae sheets, and premium flake and pellet foods will ensure their health and happiness.
