Peppermint Shrimp - Lysmata wurdemanni
Peppermint Shrimp are a popular choice for home reef aquariums. These shrimp feature a vivid red body with distinctive vein-like stripes. They typically grow to about 2 inches and can thrive in tanks as small as 10 gallons. Generally considered reef-safe, they may occasionally disturb certain corals. Peppermint Shrimp can be housed in groups without aggression issues.
These shrimp are well-known for their potential to control Aiptasia anemones, although not all individuals will consume them. The Atlantic variety is more likely to eat Aiptasia, but results can vary. Some aquarists find them effective, while others do not. As scavengers, they may ignore Aiptasia if they have ample food from tank leftovers.
If your tank lacks sufficient food, you can supplement their diet with high-quality flake and pellet foods, as well as small pieces of fresh seafood or mysis shrimp.
