Volitan Lionfish - Pterois volitans
The Volitan Lionfish is a standout among marine fish, known for its vivid colors and elegant fins. This species is a prized addition to any aquarium, showcasing a reddish-brown body with striking black and white patterns. Reaching up to 15 inches in length, the Volitan Lionfish requires a tank of at least 125 gallons. In larger tanks, multiple lionfish can coexist. While they can be part of reef aquariums, caution is advised as they may consume smaller fish and invertebrates.
The sting of a Volitan Lionfish is venomous and requires immediate attention. Running the affected area under hot water is recommended, and medical help should be sought if symptoms persist. Those with severe allergies should seek medical care immediately.
These lionfish thrive with plenty of rock formations for hiding. As carnivores, they need a diet rich in meat. Initially, live foods like feeder shrimp, small fish, and crabs are ideal to encourage feeding. Gradually, they can transition to fresh and frozen seafood. It's crucial not to release Volitan Lionfish into non-native waters, as they have become invasive in the Caribbean due to releases by aquarists.
