Mombasa Lionfish - Pterois mombasae
Introducing the Mombasa Lionfish (Pterois mombasae) a stunning saltwater spectacle that can truly enliven your aquarium. Known for their vibrant hues and graceful, flowing fin rays, these underwater wonders originate from the Western Indian Ocean, specifically around Kenya and South Africa, hence their name Mombasa.
The Mombasa Lionfish is a welcomed member of the extremely popular Lionfish group of marine fish. This species is oftentimes confused for the Antennata or Spotfin Lionfish as the two are very similar in appearance. Mombasa Lionfish can be distinguished from Antennata Lionfish by their shorter pectoral fin filaments, larger eyes, unique barring pattern on the base of the tail, and lack of the series of dark spots on the pectoral fins. Just like its better-known cousin, the Mombasa Lionfish is a beautiful fish with unique pectoral fin filaments that resemble wings.
Their beauty, however, is not without challenges when it comes to care and maintenance. Mombasa Lionfish can grow up to 9 inches in length, so a spacious aquarium is a must at least 50 gallons to allow these beauties ample room to roam. They prefer rocky environments that mimic their native reef habitats, so be sure to include plenty of hiding spots and caves in your setup. Water conditions should be kept stable with a temperature range of 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit, a pH of 8.1-8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025. Remember, sudden fluctuations can cause stress to these sensitive species.
One word of caution their beauty comes with a bite. Those elegant fin rays are equipped with venomous spines, a defense mechanism against predators. While not usually life threatening to humans, a sting can cause considerable pain and discomfort. Therefore, care should be taken when handling or maintaining the aquarium of a Mombasa Lionfish.
When it comes to their diet, the Mombasa Lionfish are carnivorous predators. They enjoy a diverse diet of meaty foods, including live and frozen shrimp, fish, squid, and even crustaceans. It's important to note that they can sometimes be reluctant eaters when first introduced to a new environment or switched from live to frozen food. In these cases, patience and persistence are key.
Species Overview: The Mombasa Lionfish (Pterois mombasae) exhibits red, brown, white, black coloration and is generally considered yes (with caution) within a marine environment. Originating from the Indian Ocean, this species requires a minimum tank size of 55 Gallons. Aquarists should note that it maintains a semi-aggressive temperament and can reach a maximum size of 7" upon full maturation. For optimal long-term health, provide a carnivore diet. Due to these specific care requirements, it is best suited for aquarists with an experience level categorized as intermediate.
