Spanish Hogfish, known scientifically as Bodianus rufus, are vibrant fish native to the Atlantic Ocean. These fish boast a sleek body with a striking color combination of blue on the upper half and bright yellow on the lower half.
Reaching up to 11 inches in length, Spanish Hogfish require a minimum tank size of 125 gallons. While they start as peaceful juveniles, they become more aggressive as they mature, often preying on smaller fish and invertebrates. They thrive in FOWLR tanks and can help by removing parasites from other fish.
For reef tanks, juvenile Spanish Hogfish can be a suitable choice if you plan to transfer them to a FOWLR tank as they grow. Mature Spanish Hogfish are not ideal for reef environments.
As carnivores, Spanish Hogfish need a diet rich in meaty foods. Feeding them mysis shrimp, and high-quality seafood like shrimp, squid, clams, and small fish will ensure they thrive.
