The Coral Hogfish, scientifically known as Bodianus mesothorax, is a strikingly colored species of hogfish. Juveniles display a reddish hue with yellow spots, while adults feature a distinctive black front and yellow rear. These fish can grow up to 10 inches and require a minimum tank size of 75 gallons. They are not ideal for reef tanks as they may consume invertebrates like shrimp, worms, small fish, and snails. Known for their aggressive nature, Coral Hogfish can stress and attack less aggressive tank mates.
As carnivores, Coral Hogfish thrive on a diet rich in meaty foods. Feeding them mysis and brine shrimp, frozen meaty foods, fresh seafood, and feeder shrimp will ensure their health and vitality. With suitable tank mates and proper nutrition, the Coral Hogfish can be a valuable addition to a FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) aquarium.
