The Boenacki Grouper (Cephalopholis boenack), also known as the Chocolate Hind or Brown-banded Rockcod, is a captivating and resilient species of grouper found across the Indo-Pacific region. This fish typically displays a brown to greenish-grey body adorned with distinct dark vertical stripes, creating a mottled look. Although not as brightly colored as some reef fish, its unique patterns and bold demeanor make it an intriguing addition to a well-suited aquarium. The Boenacki Grouper can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length.
When housing a Boenacki Grouper in an aquarium, it's crucial to consider its predatory behavior and potential size. A tank of at least 120-125 gallons is recommended to ensure sufficient swimming space and accommodate its growth. As a carnivorous species, their diet should mainly include high-quality, meaty foods like krill, shrimp, and small fish, fed 2 to 4 times weekly. Known for their aggressive nature, they will eat any fish or crustacean small enough to fit in their mouths, so tank mates should be larger and more robust. While not directly harmful to corals, their predatory instincts make them unsuitable for most typical reef aquariums. Providing plenty of rockwork with caves and crevices is essential for their comfort, as they enjoy having hiding spots.
