Green Moray Eel - Gymnothorax funebris
The Green Moray Eel, also referred to as the Black Moray, is a captivating and formidable marine species inhabiting the western Atlantic Ocean. Contrary to its name, this eel isn't truly green. Its typical dark gray or brown hue is masked by a thick yellow mucus, giving it a greenish appearance. This mucus layer also acts as a defense against parasites and diseases. As the largest moray eel in the Atlantic, the Green Moray Eel can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh as much as 65 pounds. Its elongated form and robust jaws make it a dominant predator in its environment.
These eels are commonly found in coral reefs, rocky crevices, and mangrove forests. They are nocturnal hunters, venturing out at night to feed on fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Their hunting technique involves ambushing prey, using their strong jaws for a quick and lethal bite. While generally not aggressive towards humans, the Green Moray Eel can inflict a painful bite if threatened. Their size and sharp teeth warrant respect and caution when observed.
