The Black Ribbon Eel is a captivating black eel native to the Indo-Pacific region. This species is notoriously difficult to maintain and is recommended only for seasoned aquarists.
These eels can grow beyond 36 inches and require a minimum tank size of 75 gallons. The Black Ribbon Eel features a sleek black body accented with a vivid yellow stripe along its back. Like many eels, it will attempt to consume anything that fits in its mouth, including small fish and invertebrates, so caution is advised when adding one to a reef aquarium.
When handling a tank with a Black Ribbon Eel, always be mindful of its location. Their bites can be painful and may necessitate medical care. Known for their escape skills, these eels should be housed in tanks with secure lids, as they can exploit even the smallest openings. A deep sand bed and ample rockwork are essential for hiding.
As carnivores, Black Ribbon Eels thrive on a diet rich in meaty foods. Live ghost shrimp and krill are excellent initial food choices. Feeding tongs with chopped fresh seafood are also effective for feeding.
