Male Boxfish - Ostracion meleagris
The **Male Boxfish** is a fascinating and distinctive fish that can become a highlight in any aquarium. This species exhibits significant differences in appearance between males and females, and is known by various names such as Whitespotted Boxfish, Blue Boxfish, Black Boxfish, and Spotted Boxfish. Males are more vibrant, featuring a black body adorned with white, blue, and yellow spots, while females are more subdued with a black body and white spots. Despite reaching up to 10 inches in length, a 75-gallon tank is sufficient for their needs. They are not particularly active swimmers, so a large tank is not necessary.
While generally considered reef-safe, **Male Boxfish** may occasionally nip at tubeworms. They pose a risk in aquariums as they can release toxins when stressed, potentially causing a tank crash. These fish are challenging to maintain, primarily due to feeding difficulties. Starting with live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp can encourage them to eat, after which fresh seafood and dried foods can be introduced.
