The Melanurus Wrasse is a stunning blue and green wrasse. The Melanurus Wrasse has a long and slender body with a base color of green. Along its entire body the Melanurus Wrasse has blue, red and yellow stripes. The female Melanurus Wrasse has more yellow coloration and less blue.
Melanurus Wrasse can reach a fully mature size of around 5 inches and need to be kept in tanks that are at least 55 gallons in size. Melanurus Wrasses are peaceful fish and should get along with most other fish. Melanurus Wrasses will not bother most inverts and coral found in reef tanks, making somewhat reef safe. Melanurus Wrasses will eat some pest worms and snails, but might also pick at feather dusters and smaller shrimp.
Melanurus Wrasses do best in tanks that have lots of live rock and a good depth sand bed. Melanurus Wrasses will pick at various meaty foods on the rock and need the sand bed to sleep and hide in. Melanurus Wrasses are also known as being strong jumpers, so it is important to have a tight fitting lid on a tank that you want to keep a Melanurus Wrasse in. Also make sure there are no holes large enough for Melanurus Wrasse to jump through if spooked.
Melanurus Wrasses are carnivores and require a diet rich in meaty foods. Foods such as feeder shrimp, mysis and brine shrimp, high quality flake and pellet foods and meaty high quality frozen foods will help your Melanurus Wrasse grow and thrive.
