Food and Diet: The threespot damselfish is a herbivore, feeding mainly on the algae that it cultivates as well as on the tiny organisms called epiphytes that grow on the algae.
Damselfishes are generally thought of as being the best first fishes for a new saltwater hobbyist. They are colorful, active, feed readily, and are very hardy. In fact they are so hardy, that they are often used to "break in" a new tank, creating and then surviving the first waves of toxic ammonia.
Since damselfish are a bit territorial, a good rule is to keep only one damselfish per tank, OR a group of four or more to spread the aggression.
The exceptions are the Chromis species, which should always be kept in schools
