The Holy Grail of the Scorpionfish clan, the Rhinopias are as spectacular as they are expensive. Seldom collected and much in demand, be sure to grab them fast when available. The image shown is an example, colors will vary but they're generally in red, purple, orangish hues. They're all awesome! Non-aggressive, but they can swallow fishes nearly as large as they are! Don't house with curious fishes such as triggers or larger wrasses or angels, as these type fishes will likely pick at your Rhinopias as they would a sponge.

Unlike their ambushing relatives, the lion fishes, scorpions lie in wait until their prey are within reach. Only then do they open their mouths and a fraction of a second later, opening their gills. This creates suction which pulls their prey in. Please be aware that these fish are VENEMOUS and should be handled with care and respect. They will eat almost anything that will fit in their mouths and most will only take to live foods initially. Once acclimated (adjusted to their tank) and persisted, they can be trained to accept frozen foods. They do not have to eat everyday, twice or three times a week should be sufficient.

Maximum Size: The Rhinopias grow up to a size of 6 inches.

General Size: This fish is generally available in 5 to 8 inches.

Minimum Tank Size: A 100 gallons or larger aquarium provides good environment for Rhinopias.

Tank Conditions: The Rhinopias should ideally be kept in temperatures between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. A pH value of 8.1 or 8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025 should be maintained. When kept with invertebrates, the specific gravity range should be 1.020 to 1.025, for the invertebrate species. In a fish only aquarium, the specific gravity should fall between 1.020 and 1.023.

Habitat: It is generally found on coral reefs and can be sometimes found hiding in amongst the coral. The Rhinopias has a widespread distribution throughout the Indo-Pacific.

Feeding and Diet: The Rhinopias will eat almost anything that will fit in their mouths and most will only take to live foods initially.
